When are McKinsey performance reviews? (2026)
McKinsey runs frequent engagement-end reviews on top of a semiannual formal cycle, with an up-or-out progression model. Confirm your own dates with your development leader.
Twice a year
No specific review month is published for this company, because none could be sourced from the company's own material. What follows is the cycle shape, which is what is actually knowable. Your own manager is the authority on this year's dates.
How the cycle works
Strategy consulting has a feedback rhythm unlike almost any other industry: you are formally reviewed at the end of every engagement, not just at the end of the year. Those engagement reviews accumulate, and the periodic formal cycle is largely an aggregation of them. That changes the preparation problem entirely. There is no single moment to prepare for; there are many, spread across the year, and the aggregate is what decides your standing.
Progression is explicitly up-or-out. Each level has an expected tenure, and staying at a level past that band is not a stable state. Every review therefore carries a trajectory question alongside the performance one, and the trajectory question is the one that matters more.
Staffing is the underlying mechanism. Partners choose who they want on their teams, and being chosen repeatedly by demanding partners is the internal reputation that no self-assessment can substitute for.

What actually gets weighed
Problem solving under ambiguity, which is the explicit core skill. Structuring an undefined problem into something a team can work on, and being right about which branch matters, is what the whole assessment orbits.
Client impact, meaning whether the recommendation was implemented and whether it worked. A brilliant analysis the client did not act on is a weaker result than a good analysis they did.
Client relationship and presence at senior levels: whether executives listen to you, ask for you, and treat you as a counterpart rather than as staff.
Team leadership and development, which begins mattering earlier here than most people expect and is a substantial part of the picture from the middle levels upward.
What to have ready
- Every engagement review you received, collected as you go, since the aggregate is the assessment.
- For each study, the recommendation, whether the client implemented it, and what happened.
- Partners who staffed you more than once, which is the signal that carries.
- Instances where you restructured an ambiguous problem, since that is the named core skill.
- Your own honest read on trajectory, because the up-or-out model means that conversation is happening whether or not you initiate it.
